Škrinja

Škrinja is a small, rocky peak at the easternmost end of the Kalnik ridge, in the municipality of Općina Kalnik in Croatia (Podravina region, Koprivnica-Križevci County). It rises to roughly 504 metres above sea level and, while far from the highest point on the ridge, stands out for its bare, rocky profile that draws hikers and climbers from around Koprivnica and Križevci.

Where does Škrinja sit on Kalnik?

Kalnik is a low but steep mountain ridge separating the Podravina lowlands from the Prigorje region, known for its limestone outcrops, caves and scenic crests. Škrinja occupies the very eastern tip of this ridge and is the lowest of the local summits found there. The crest at this point has an unusual character: roughly 80 metres of exposed, rocky edge, largely bare of vegetation, which clearly sets Škrinja apart from the forested stretches of Kalnik elsewhere.

How do you reach the summit?

The easiest approach comes from the west, through tall deciduous forest. Marked hiking trails start in the village of Kalnik and at the mountain lodge on the Kalnik ridge, from where the path climbs toward the crest and on to the top of Škrinja. This route is considered manageable for most hikers with average fitness.

The eastern side tells a different story: the ridge drops away steeply there, with rock suited to climbing. This variant, known locally as "Zubi Škrinje" (the Teeth of Škrinja), is a demanding route meant for people with experience on rocky terrain and a good head for exposure. It is a popular objective among more advanced hikers and climbers from local mountaineering clubs.

What can you see from the top?

The reward for the climb is a wide panorama in every direction. From Škrinja you can look out over the Podravina lowlands, Međimurje and Bilogora, as well as the more distant ranges of Papuk, Psunj and Moslavačka gora. Medvednica and the area around Križevci are also visible, with the forests covering the rest of Kalnik spreading out below. Because the approach is rocky and open, the views unfold along most of the route, not only at the summit itself.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring and autumn are the best seasons for this hike, offering moderate temperatures and generally the clearest visibility. In summer, the rocky, largely shadeless stretch of ridge can get quite hot, so it's worth carrying water and starting early in the day. In winter, especially after snowfall or in icy conditions, the eastern "Zubi Škrinje" route becomes hazardous and is not recommended without proper experience and equipment.
