Vratar Fortress

Vratar Fortress is a medieval fortification perched on Gradina Hill near the village of Borovci in Croatia, close to the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Built likely at the end of the 14th century, the fortress controlled trade routes connecting the Metković, Nova Sela, and Vrgorac regions.

What does the fortress look like?

Vratar features a distinctive irregular pentagonal layout with two towers – a larger one on the north side and a smaller one to the west. The defensive walls, particularly well-preserved on the northern and western sides, reach heights of four to five meters. The fortification sits at an elevation of 97 meters above sea level, providing a strategic observation point over the surrounding area.
