Vosac

Vošac is a peak on the seaward rim of the Biokovo massif above Makarska, and one of the best-known viewpoints on the entire Makarska Riviera. It rises to 1,422 metres above sea level, just above the lower Štrbina viewpoint (1,338 m), and has been a hiking destination for both visitors and locals for decades.

How do you get to Vošac?

The easiest way is by car. From Makarska, take the road toward Vrgorac, then turn off after a few kilometres onto the road leading to the entrance of Biokovo Nature Park (roughly 6 km from the turn to the park gate). From there, a paved scenic road climbs high into the mountains, bringing you close to the walking trails that circle Vošac.

The other option is a proper hike from below. The classic historic route starts in the village of Makar (229 m), just above Makarska, and climbs via Vošac all the way to the mountain hut below Sveti Jure (1,594 m) — Biokovo's highest peak. It's one of two main hiking routes linking Makarska with Sveti Jure, popular with experienced hikers, and it demands decent fitness and proper footwear.

What will you see there?

Vošac offers one of the finest views on the whole coast: Makarska sits directly below, with Tučepi, Baška Voda and Brela stretching along the shoreline, and on a clear day you can pick out Omiš and the area around Split. On one side lies the sea and its islands, on the other the raw, rocky interior of Biokovo — a contrast that draws photographers and mountain landscape lovers alike.

Close to the summit, in a valley about 800 metres northeast of the peak at roughly 1,350 m, stands the Vošac mountain lodge. It was rebuilt in 2025 on the site of an older hut dating back to 1933 and now operates as a genuinely comfortable base: a restaurant on the ground floor, double rooms with en-suite bathrooms and a shared dormitory sleeping several dozen guests upstairs, plus a sauna — a rare level of comfort for mountain infrastructure in this part of Croatia.

About a ten-minute drive further along the park road sits one of Biokovo's most talked-about recent attractions: Skywalk Biokovo (Nebeska šetnica), a glass viewing platform suspended over a sheer drop, with the sea and islands visible almost right beneath your feet. It's easy to combine both stops in a single day trip.

When should you visit?

Late spring and early autumn (May–June and September–October) are the best times to hike or drive up to Vošac, when mountain temperatures are manageable — summers here get very hot and sunny, with little shade along most of the trails. In summer, start early and carry plenty of water, since there are no water sources along the upper section of the park. In winter, the scenic road can be closed periodically when snow conditions are poor.
