Volujak

Volujak is a rocky peak on the Mosor massif, rising above the village of Gornje Sitno on the mountain's southern slopes, roughly 21 km from Split. It marks one of the notable points along a popular route heading from Gornje Sitno into the Mosor range, appreciated by hikers for its stony character and open views over the valley below.

How do you get to Volujak?

The starting point is Gornje Sitno, a village that administratively belongs to the city of Split despite sitting several kilometers inland from the coast. A small parking area at the trailhead marks the start of a marked path heading up into the Mosor range, and Gornje Sitno is also reachable by a regular bus line from Split, making the hike accessible even without a car.

The trail from Gornje Sitno begins with a gentle ascent and passes close to the Volujak ridge, only a few hundred meters off the main path. A short detour lets you reach the rocky top and take in the surroundings before rejoining the main route, which continues toward Veliki Kabal — the highest peak of Mosor — or to the Umberto Girometta mountain lodge.

Volujak is defined by the bare, rocky karst terrain typical of Mosor: exposed limestone, low scrub, and views stretching across the surrounding ridges and the villages scattered at the mountain's foot. It's a quieter spot than the well-known viewpoints on Veliki Kabal, which makes it a good short stop during a longer day on the trail.

Following the path deeper into the massif brings you to the recently renovated Umberto Girometta lodge, set in the central part of Mosor near the Ljuvač spring at 868 m above sea level. The lodge underwent a full restoration and reopened on 2 October 2022, and it now serves as a natural resting point for hikers continuing further into the mountains.

When should you visit?

Spring and autumn are the best seasons for hiking around Volujak and Gornje Sitno, when temperatures are milder and the rocky slopes don't heat up as much as they do in summer. In summer, an early start is worth planning for, since much of the terrain offers little shade. In winter the trail is generally still accessible, but expect a colder wind along the exposed sections of the ridge.
