Ljubljan

Ljubljan is a rocky peak in the Mosor massif rising above the town of Dugopolje in Split-Dalmatia County, Croatia. Standing at roughly 1,262 metres above sea level, it marks the western end of the range's main summit ridge, known as Veliki Kabal, with the top itself identified by an inscription carved into a large boulder. It's one of the more popular hiking destinations in this part of Dalmatia, valued above all for its sweeping panorama and a relatively short approach from the Dugopolje side.

How do you get to Ljubljan?

The usual starting point is Dugopolje, about 15 km from Split. The best-known trail begins in the hamlet of Džakići at the foot of Mosor and follows the ridge of the massif across meadows and stretches of dense Mediterranean scrub, finishing with a steep climb over exposed rock just below the summit. The route is well marked thanks to the work of the local mountaineering society, and covering it typically takes a few hours one way, depending on fitness and the chosen variant. A shorter alternative connects the two peaks via the Veliki Kabal mountain hut along the same ridge.

From Ljubljan the view stretches across the whole region — on a clear day you can pick out both the coast and islands of central Dalmatia and the green hinterland behind Split, with Dugopolje itself visible almost directly below. On the northern side of the peak stands a small mountain hut maintained by the Croatian Mountaineering Society "Ljubljan" from Dugopolje — a converted container fitted out with a dining area, stove, fireplace, sleeping spots and a well of drinking water, serving as a base and shelter for hikers.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring and autumn are the best seasons to climb, when temperatures on the rocky ridge sections are manageable and the vegetation, including the characteristic macchia scrub, looks its most attractive. In summer the exposed rock heats up quickly and shade is scarce, so an early start is advisable. Every September the local mountaineering society organizes an annual pilgrimage-hike to a nearby chapel, combined with an open-air Mass and a shared meal — a good opportunity to experience the peak together with the local community.
