Vitturi Castle

Vitturi Castle is a fifteenth-century fortification in Kaštel Lukšić, one of seven settlements that form the town of Kaštela in Dalmatia, Croatia. The structure combines the functions of a defensive fortress and a Renaissance aristocratic residence.

How was the castle built?

At the end of the fifteenth century, two noblemen from Trogir, Nikola and Jerolim Vitturi, erected this fortified seat in response to the Ottoman threat following the fall of Bosnia in 1463. Seventeen new fortifications and twelve fortified villages were built along the Kaštela Bay during this period. Construction of the castle was completed in 1564. It consisted of a residential building and two defensive towers, connected to the mainland by a drawbridge, which was replaced with a permanent stone bridge in the eighteenth century.

What will you see inside?

The renovated castle now serves as the local history museum and cultural center of Kaštel Lukšić. Former residential chambers house permanent exhibitions and temporary display halls. Concerts, theatrical performances, and cultural events are held here regularly. Admission to the castle grounds requires a fee.

Next to the castle stretches a classicist park designed by the Vitturi family in the second half of the eighteenth century. It was granted monument status in 1968.
