Viševica

Viševica (1,428 m) is the highest peak in this part of Gorski Kotar, rising above the Vinodol Valley and the town of Bribir. For locals it's the natural landmark visible from nearly anywhere in the valley, and for visitors it's one of the most rewarding viewpoints where the mountains meet the Kvarner coast.

Where is Viševica in relation to Bribir?

The peak sits on the ridge that separates Gorski Kotar from the coastal Vinodol Valley, right above the area known as Bribir Gora. This land was once used as summer pasture and farmland by the surrounding villages; today it's mainly a hiking destination valued for its views. Because the ascent from the coastal side is steep and demanding, the main trails to Viševica were laid out starting from Vinodol-side settlements, including Bribir, which makes it the most convenient starting point for most hikers.

How do you get to the summit?

A popular trailhead is the parking area by the Vagabundina mountain hut, from which a roughly 5 km trail leads to the summit with about 550 m of elevation gain. The climb itself typically takes 2 to 2.5 hours, and the full round trip — including time at the top — takes about 4 to 5 hours. Viševica is also one of the stops on a longer 53.7 km ridge trail called Nebeska Staza (the "Heavenly Trail"), which also passes over the neighbouring peaks of Kobiljak, Medviđak and Zagradski Vrh. No climbing gear is needed, but given the distance and elevation gain it's worth setting aside a full day and bringing proper trekking shoes and water.

Viševica is often described as a natural amphitheatre: on one side it opens onto the sea and the islands of the northern Adriatic, and on the other onto the ranges of Gorski Kotar. On a clear day, the summit offers views of Velebit, Bjelolasica, Risnjak, Snježnik and Učka. This combination of mountain and sea panoramas makes Viševica one of the most visited viewpoints in the region, even though it isn't the tallest peak in Gorski Kotar.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring, summer and early autumn are the best times to hike, when the trail is dry and the views stay clear of fog for longer. In summer it's worth starting early to avoid the heat on the exposed ridge sections. In winter the terrain can be snow-covered and demands more experience and proper equipment, so less experienced hikers are advised to plan their trip outside the winter season.
