Jelenčić

Jelenčić is a 1,106-metre peak in Croatia's Gorski Kotar region, rising above the small village of Benkovac Fužinski in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. Together with neighboring Tuhobić, it forms a ridge that is a well-known hiking destination and a landmark visible from the Kvarner coast.

Where is Jelenčić located?

Jelenčić sits at the southeastern end of an elongated mountain ridge that stretches roughly 8.5 km from northwest to southeast, running from Gornje Jelenje all the way to Benkovac Fužinski. Three named summits mark the ridge: Straža (984 m) to the northwest, Tuhobić (1,109 m) in the middle, and Jelenčić (1,106 m) at the southeastern end. The whole massif forms the coastal edge of the Gorski Kotar plateau, separating the interior highlands from the Kvarner shoreline.

How do you get there?

Several marked mountain trails lead to the summit, all part of the Goranski Planinarski Put (GPP), the main long-distance hiking route through Gorski Kotar. Longer approaches start from the villages of Fužine, Lič, Zlobin and Plase, while the shortest and most popular access point is Benkovac Fužinski itself — a tiny settlement of just 40 residents (2021 census) located about 2.5 km west of Fužine, at coordinates 45°18'23"N, 14°40'39"E. The route is also hiked in winter, with a dedicated cold-season ascent recorded via Gornje Jelenje and Benkovac Fužinski, showing the ridge is accessible to experienced hikers year-round.

From Jelenčić, a ridge path continues to Tuhobić over 3.3 km, with barely 3 metres of elevation difference between the two summits — making it an easy, pleasant walk along an open crest rather than a strenuous climb. The middle section of the ridge is covered in low grass and has a gentle, open character, while the lower slopes on both sides are forested. The coastal (southern) side descends in a gradual, grassy slope toward the sea, whereas the northern side, facing the Lepenica valley, is steep and densely wooded. The ridge offers wide views over the Bay of Rijeka, Mount Učka, Snježnik, and other prominent peaks of Gorski Kotar and the coast.

When is the best time to visit?

Thanks to the gentle, largely flat ridge walk between Jelenčić and Tuhobić, the trail suits hikers of varying experience for most of the year. The existence of a separate winter-ascent route via Gornje Jelenje and Benkovac Fužinski shows the area also draws visitors outside the summer season — in colder months, appropriate mountain gear and a check of current snow conditions are advisable.
