About this place
Velký Chlum is a small neo-volcanic hill just south of Děčín, best known for the stone lookout tower crowning its summit. The hill sits in the cadastral area of Chlum u Děčína, roughly 3 km from the city centre, and despite reaching just over 500 metres above sea level, it opens up one of the finest panoramic views in the Czech Switzerland region.
How to get there?
The easiest approach is by car from Děčín toward Benešov nad Ploučnicí, driving up to the hamlet of Horní Chlum, which sits in the saddle between Malý Chlum and Velký Chlum. From there, a red-marked trail leads roughly 1 km uphill to the tower. Travellers without a car can start directly from the Děčín Staré Město railway station and follow the same red trail, which continues onward through Vrabinec all the way to Těchlovice. An alternative approach is the yellow trail from Boletice. All the routes are well marked and require no special fitness — this is a typical, family-friendly outing of a few hours.
What will you see?
The main draw is the stone observation tower, built in 1928–1929 to a design by Děčín architect Jahnel and opened to visitors in May 1930. After 1996 the structure underwent a thorough reconstruction and reopened to the public in July 1997. Reaching the top takes 83 steps, and the viewing platform has two levels offering a wide panorama. On one side stretches the rolling landscape of the Czech Central Highlands (České středohoří); on the other, the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory) and the Elbe Sandstones (Labské pískovce) come into view. On a clear day, you can also make out the city of Děčín itself, lying in the Elbe valley below.
When to visit?
The tower is free and open year-round, so timing mainly comes down to weather and visibility. The best conditions come on clear, dry days — autumn and winter tend to offer sharper visibility, and bare trees along the trail further improve the view from the platform. Spring and summer bring green, scenic woods and meadows along the approach, which is an attraction in its own right, though haze can occasionally soften the view. It's worth avoiding foggy mornings, which are common in the Elbe valley in autumn.
