Údolí Hasiny u Lipence

Lipenec, Czechia

About this place

Údolí Hasiny u Lipence (the Hasina Valley near Lipenec) is a small but scientifically significant nature reserve in the Louny district, in the Ústí nad Labem Region of the Czech Republic, next to the village of Lipenec. The protected area covers the valley of the Hasina stream, spans roughly 16.8 hectares, and sits at an elevation of 200 to 245 metres above sea level. It has held legal protection status since 2002.

Why is this valley protected?

The reserve's primary importance lies in palaeontology. Exposed rock layers along the valley preserve the remains of plants and animals dating back millions of years, from the Upper Cretaceous period — the final stage of the Mesozoic era. For geologists and palaeontologists, this is one of the more notable sites of its kind in the region, offering a window into what life looked like here when much of what is now the Czech Republic was covered by a shallow sea.

The second reason for protection is ecological. The Hasina streambed, together with the vegetation lining it, forms a natural biocorridor that supports species migration and helps maintain the ecological stability of the surrounding agricultural landscape, which otherwise dominates this part of northern Bohemia. Several protected plant and animal species also occur within the valley.

What can visitors see on site?

A nature trail called "Údolí Hasiny" runs through the reserve, introducing visitors to both the natural and geological-palaeontological features of the area. Information panels placed along the route explain what makes the exposed rock layers special and what kinds of fossils can be found in them. The walk follows the stream through a scenic, partly wooded valley, away from heavier tourist traffic.

The valley's landscape stands in contrast to the surrounding farmland typical of northern Bohemia — the ravine cut by the stream creates a microclimate that favours both the local vegetation and the preservation of the geological exposures.

Who manages the reserve?

Formal oversight of the protected area rests with the Regional Authority of the Ústí Region (Krajský úřad Ústeckého kraje), while direct care of the nature trail itself — including maintaining the information panels and trail infrastructure — is handled by the local branch of the Czech Union for Nature Conservation (ČSOP) in Louny. This division of responsibilities is typical for smaller Czech nature reserves, where legal protection is paired with local conservation organisations handling education and outreach.
