About this place
Kozinecká stráň is a small but botanically significant nature reserve set on a steep, south-facing slope of the Výrov ridge, within the Džbán Protected Landscape Area near the village of Třeskonice in the Louny district of the Czech Republic. The protected area was established in 1997 to safeguard remnants of warm-loving oak woodland — a habitat type that once covered many sun-exposed slopes across the region but has become increasingly rare.
Why is the site protected?
The reserve exists primarily to preserve surviving fragments of thermophilous (warmth-loving) oak forest together with the rich plant community that depends on it. The steep, south-facing exposure creates a distinct microclimate favoring species adapted to dry, hot conditions — plants that have largely disappeared elsewhere in the country as farmland and dense commercial forestry replaced their natural habitat. The combination of slope orientation, thin soils, and long-term low-intensity land use allowed these specialized plants to persist here.
What plants grow here?
Kozinecká stráň is best known for its notable population of dittany (třemdava bílá, Dictamnus albus), a striking plant with pale pink flowers and a strong, lemon-like scent, famous for releasing flammable essential oils on hot days. Alongside dittany, the site supports several other demanding thermophilous species, including hoary rock-rose, wild peony, large-flowered honeywort, and a low-growing daphne shrub. The concentration of so many specialized plants within such a limited area makes this one of the more botanically noteworthy sites in the Louny region.
What does the landscape look like?
The reserve covers a steep southern slope of the Výrov ridge, which keeps the terrain strongly sun-exposed for most of the day. This orientation, combined with poor, well-drained soil, has prevented the growth of dense commercial forest, allowing scattered, open oak stands to survive — closer in character to warm scrubland than a closed canopy forest. From the upper part of the slope, visitors can look out over the surrounding hills of the Džbán Protected Landscape Area, an area known for its rolling terrain and several similar small nature reserves scattered across it.
How to get there?
A red-marked hiking trail leads to Kozinecká stráň, running roughly 2 kilometers from the summit of Výrov. The route is short enough to fit comfortably into a longer day trip around the Žatec and Podbořany area, where several other protected sites managed by the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic can also be found.
