About this place
Březno u Postoloprt Nature Monument is a small but geologically remarkable protected area on the eastern edge of the village of Březno, part of the municipality of Postoloprty in the Louny district of the Ústí nad Labem Region. The reserve sits on the northern slope of the Březenský hill on the right bank of the Ohře River and covers just 1.8569 hectares at an elevation of 190–224 metres.
What makes this site special?
The reserve occupies a former limestone quarry where landslides exposed a distinctive sequence of claystones and marls. This outcrop became the stratotype of the Březno Formation within the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin — in plain terms, it is the reference section geologists use to define and date this particular rock layer across the entire region. That role gives the site significance reaching well beyond the local area, placing it among geological localities of European importance.
Why visit?
For anyone interested in geology or palaeontology, Březno u Postoloprt is a genuine treasure trove. The exposed claystone layers preserve abundant fossils typical of a shallow Cretaceous sea: bivalve shells, marine sponges, bryozoans, cephalopods (including ammonites), as well as remains of marine crustaceans and crabs. Palaeontological and geological research has continued here uninterrupted since the 19th century, making the locality one of the classic study sites for Czech Cretaceous geology.
When was it protected?
The area received legal protection on 19 August 1998, by decision of the Louny district authority. The main purpose of the designation is to preserve the geological outcrop and its fossil content from erosion, burial, and uncontrolled collecting by fossil hunters.
How to get there?
The reserve lies right next to the railway line and the Březno u Postoloprt stop, making it accessible without a car. The surrounding countryside is rural and agricultural, typical of the lower Ohře valley, with gentle hills and views over the river.
Frequently asked questions
Can visitors collect fossils here? No — the site is protected precisely because of the scientific value of the exposure, and uncontrolled digging destroys material needed for future research.
Is it a large area? No, the reserve covers just over 1.8 hectares. It is a small, highly valuable geological exposure rather than a sprawling area for long walks.
Who is this site for? Primarily for visitors with an interest in geology and palaeontology, as well as travellers exploring the lesser-known corners of the lower Ohře valley while visiting nearby Postoloprty.
What else is worth seeing nearby? The town of Postoloprty itself and the Ohře river valley offer further stops, and the Březno u Postoloprt railway station makes it easy to combine a visit with other sights in the region.
