What is the history behind it?

The earliest written record of Turienzo itself dates to the year 923, when the presbyter Ansemiro donated local lands to the monastery of San Pedro de Montes. By the 13th century the area had come under the control of the Knights Templar, and in 1301 the tower and surrounding estate passed to the Osorio family, whose name it still carries. Before the Osorios took possession, the tower is believed to have guarded nearby gold mines, and during the Templar period it kept watch over pilgrims travelling the Way of St. James. Today the tower belongs to the Marquesses of Astorga and is listed as a Cultural Interest property in the general inventory of historical and artistic heritage of the province of León.
