Teatro Cortés is a historic theatre in Almoradí, a small town in Alicante province, in the Vega Baja del Segura region of the Valencian Community. Built in neoclassical style in the early twentieth century, it remains the town's oldest and most important cultural venue.

The project was driven by Mariano Cortés Práxedes, a wealthy landowner born in Aguas de Busot who had settled in Almoradí and wanted to give the town a proper venue for performances. The building itself was designed by architect Enrique Sánchez Sedeño, while the interior decoration was entrusted to Bernardo Carratalá Poveda, a painter and set designer from Alicante. Carratalá modelled his work on Madrid's Teatro Apolo, a theatre demolished in 1929 — which makes Teatro Cortés one of the few places where an echo of that lost interior can still be experienced firsthand. The theatre opened its doors on 7 October 1908.

How has the building changed over time?

For its first decades, the hall doubled as a stage for drama and zarzuela and as a cinema, a common combination for provincial Spanish theatres of the period. Performances stopped in 1971, when financial troubles forced the building to close, and it sat unused for over a decade. The turning point came in 1987, when Almoradí town council bought the theatre for 12 million pesetas and undertook its restoration. The renovated building reopened in 1988 and has operated continuously ever since.

What happens at Teatro Cortés today?

With 480 seats, the theatre runs a season from October to June, combining live stage performances with film screenings. Its programme includes drama, concerts, dance, and shows for children.
