Svobodova niva

Železná Ruda, Czechia

About this place

Svobodova niva is a small but ecologically valuable nature reserve located within the municipality of Železná Ruda, in the cadastral area of Hojsova Stráž, in the Klatovy district of the Plzeň Region. The protected area covers 9.42 hectares and sits at an elevation of 720 to 830 metres above sea level, within the Šumava mountain range.

Where exactly is the reserve located?

Svobodova niva stretches along the narrow valley of an unnamed stream that flows down from the southwestern slopes of the Pancíř ridge and forms a right-bank tributary of the Zelenský stream. Its geographic coordinates are 49°13'13.44" N, 13°12'50.76" E. Sitting at the heart of the Šumava mountains, the area lies close to popular tourist destinations such as Železná Ruda itself and the nearby Špičák.

When and why was the reserve established?

The area was granted protected status on 12 December 1996. The reserve was created to preserve a diverse mix of forest, meadow and spring-fed plant communities together with their full range of species, and to protect botanically valuable vegetation growing in the reserve's treeless sections. In the forested parts, the management priority is to allow natural development of the woodland without human intervention.

What protection status does the site hold?

Svobodova niva is registered under code 2014 and is classified under IUCN Category IV, meaning it is managed primarily for the conservation of specific species or habitats. Oversight rests with the Nature and Landscape Protection Agency of the Czech Republic (AOPK ČR), while day-to-day administration is handled by the Šumava National Park and Protected Landscape Area Administration, which oversees most protected areas across the region.

What can visitors find on site?

The reserve's character is shaped by a mosaic of habitats clustered around the stream — from waterlogged meadows and springs, through meadow plant communities, to patches of forest left to natural processes. This habitat diversity packed into a relatively small area is precisely what justified protecting the site: the combination of wet meadows, springs and woodland in a single location supports plant life that has become increasingly rare in the more heavily altered parts of the Šumava region.
