About this place
Úhlavský luh is a nature reserve in the municipality of Hamry in the Klatovy district, protecting a stretch of the Úhlava River floodplain within the Šumava Protected Landscape Area. The reserve covers 50.12 hectares and extends for roughly three kilometers, at an elevation between 530 and 580 meters above sea level. The terrain is almost entirely flat, which allows the river's natural processes to shape the landscape largely undisturbed.
Why was the area protected?
The reserve was established in 2003 to protect the natural ecosystems of the Úhlava floodplain, including its dynamically developing herbaceous and woody plant communities. Most of the territory is covered by naturally formed floodplain forest, which has developed here since agricultural and other economic use of the land was abandoned in the second half of the 20th century. The river still meanders freely through the reserve, forming oxbow lakes, gravel bars, and periodically flooded areas, so vegetation shifts noticeably depending on distance from the channel and soil moisture.
What can you see in the reserve?
The landscape is a mosaic of floodplain forest, damp meadows, and willow thickets lining the riverbanks. The Úhlava flows here in its natural, unregulated channel, which is unusual for such a long stretch of river and makes the reserve a valuable example of fluvial processes occurring without human intervention. The variety of habitats — from drier river terraces to waterlogged patches right at the bank — supports a diverse range of plant and animal species tied to riverside and wetland environments.
How can you visit Úhlavský luh?
An educational trail called Hamry – Úhlavský luh, roughly 4 kilometers long, runs through the reserve along the right bank of the Úhlava. The route is marked with five information panels that introduce visitors to the reserve's history, its flora and fauna, and the processes that shape the river valley. The trail is flat and easy, suitable for families with children. It typically starts from the village of Hamry and follows the river, giving visitors a close look at the natural floodplain forest.
Where is Úhlavský luh located?
