Městišťské rokle

About this place

Městišťské rokle is a nature reserve in the Šumava region of the Czech Republic, located in the Klatovy district near the village of Čachrov. The protected area consists of two separate sections stretching along the headwaters of the Jelenka stream and its tributaries, south of the village of Městiště and to the east-northeast of Hojsova Stráž.

What does the reserve's landscape look like?

The name "rokle" refers to ravines, and that is exactly what defines this place: deeply cut valleys carved by the Jelenka stream and its side tributaries. The slopes drop steeply toward the streambed, in places reaching angles of up to 40 degrees. This rugged terrain has made the core of the reserve difficult to access, which over the decades limited human interference and allowed the forests to retain a character close to their natural, undisturbed state.

What grows inside Městišťské rokle?

The steep slopes of the ravines are covered with spruce-fir forests, in places showing a primeval character, along with a rich herbaceous understorey. Many rare plant species have found favorable conditions here, thanks to the humidity and the specific microclimate created by the narrow, shaded valleys. Some of the trees reach ages of up to 210 years, making these stands among the oldest forest patches in the Šumava region.

In the treeless parts of the reserve, where the terrain opens up, herbaceous plant communities have survived as well, and they are protected as an integral part of the valley's overall ecosystem.

Why was this area placed under protection?

The purpose of protection is to preserve the springs, peat bogs, and riparian meadows along the Jelenka stream and its tributaries, together with all their components — both plant and animal species. Protection also covers the maintenance and restoration of natural forest stands, as well as the conservation of herbaceous plant communities in the reserve's open, treeless sections.

This combination of protection goals means that Městišťské rokle is not a single scenic viewpoint but a whole mosaic ecosystem — spanning wet spring-fed peat bogs, streamside meadows, and steep slopes covered with old-growth forest.

Where is Městišťské rokle located?

The reserve lies within the Šumava Protected Landscape Area, in its western part, close to the border with Bavaria. The proximity of the villages of Městiště and Hojsova Stráž makes the surrounding area a relatively accessible starting point for people planning hikes in this part of Šumava, even though the interior of the reserve itself — due to the steep ravine slopes — remains difficult to traverse on foot.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a marked trail running through the reserve? Because the ravines are steep and deeply cut, the interior of the reserve is hard to access. Visits to this type of terrain are best planned using marked trails that pass near the reserve's boundaries rather than through its core.

What is the area's greatest natural value? The most valuable features are the spruce-fir forests with a near-primeval character, including trees up to 210 years old, along with the springs and peat bogs found along the Jelenka stream.

In which region is the reserve located? Městišťské rokle lies in the Šumava region, in the Klatovy district in the western part of the Czech Republic, close to the border with Germany.
