About this place
Svobodná hora
Svobodná hora is a 640-metre hill, the highest point of the Chelčice Highlands (part of the wider Netonice Highlands) in the foothills of the Šumava mountains, in the Strakonice District of South Bohemia, Czech Republic. It rises above the right bank of the Blanice River, roughly 2 km east of Bavorov and 5 km southwest of Vodňany, and since 2019 its summit has been crowned by the wooden Haniperk lookout tower.
Where is Svobodná hora and how high does it rise?
At 640 metres above sea level, Svobodná hora tops a short ridge running above the Blanice valley between Vodňany and Bavorov. The elevation isn't dramatic by Czech standards, but against the flat, farmed landscape of the Vodňany basin the hill stands out clearly, making it the natural high point and viewpoint of the area.
What is there to see at the summit?
The main draw on Svobodná hora is the Haniperk lookout tower, opened on 28 October 2019 on the initiative of the town of Vodňany. The wooden structure stands 24.5 metres tall, with a covered viewing platform at 21 metres reached by climbing 110 steps. The tower's name was chosen through a public vote among local residents.
The climb is rewarded with a wide sweep of South Bohemia. To the southeast, visitors can pick out Hluboká Castle, the church at Rudolfov, the city of České Budějovice, the Novohradské Mountains, and Kleť with its transmitter tower. To the south rise Chlum, Knížecí stolec and Libín; to the southwest, the Šumava peaks of Boubín and Bobík. Looking west, Mařský vrch near Vimperk (also topped by a transmitter) comes into view, and on a clear day the Temelín nuclear power plant and the ruins of Helfenburk Castle near Bavorov are visible too. A wayside crucifix stands close to the summit.
What is the history behind the hill?
Small-scale gold mining once took place on the slopes of Svobodná hora; little remains today besides old pits and depressions in the ground, quiet traces of mining activity from centuries past. In the 18th century, three separate settlements were founded on the hill's slopes, each belonging to a different noble estate, a division still reflected in their names: Vodňanské Svobodné Hory, Libějovické Svobodné Hory, and Bavorovské Svobodné Hory. That old administrative split still shows up in the local place names today.
How do you get to Svobodná hora?
The summit and tower can only be reached on foot. The easiest approach follows the red-marked trail from the village of Vodňanské Svobodné Hory (part of the town of Vodňany), leaving only about 1 km to walk to the tower; there is a car park near the village. Coming from Bavorov on the opposite side means a longer stretch of about 3.5 km on the same trail, with parking available near the swimming pool there. The tower itself is freely accessible, with no admission fee and no fixed opening hours.
