About this place
Chlumečský vrch is a forested, dome-shaped hill rising to 610 metres above sea level in the central part of the Blanský les Protected Landscape Area, on the foothills of the Šumava range, in the Český Krumlov district of South Bohemia. It stands roughly 100 metres above the Křemže basin, carved by the Chmelenský and Křemžský streams, and serves as a recognisable landmark for the surrounding settlements, including the small village of Stupná.
Where exactly is Chlumečský vrch located?
The hill takes its name from the tiny hamlet of Chlumeček, which borders its northern foot. To the east and southeast, the land around the summit belongs to the town of Křemže, the administrative centre of this part of the region. Stupná, a settlement forming part of the Křemže municipality, lies just a short distance from the hill's base. The entire area falls within the Blanský les Protected Landscape Area, one of the more ecologically valuable stretches of southern Bohemia.
What is on top of the hill?
The summit carries a small telecommunications mast, erected in 2002. It is a modest structure with no observation platform for visitors — unlike the far better known lookout tower on nearby Kleť, about 6 kilometres to the south. Chlumečský vrch itself is therefore more of a destination for a quiet forest walk than for panoramic views.
What kind of nature covers the hill?
The slopes are dominated by spruce forest, typical of the Šumava foothills. In the southwestern and southern sections, the spruce stands give way to a mixed cover of pine and oak, adding variety to that part of the woodland. This mosaic of tree species makes the surroundings a pleasant choice for anyone looking for calm walking routes within the Blanský les Protected Landscape Area.
What else is worth seeing nearby?
The area around Chlumečský vrch sits close to several notable attractions of South Bohemia. About 6 km to the south rises Kleť, home to one of the country's oldest and most recognisable lookout towers. Roughly 9 km to the southeast lies the Zlatá Koruna monastery, a valuable piece of ecclesiastical architecture. The UNESCO-listed town of Český Krumlov itself is about 12 km away, set in the Vltava river valley, making it a natural base for anyone planning a longer stay in the region.
How do you get to Stupná and Chlumečský vrch?
The most convenient starting point is the town of Křemže, well connected to Český Krumlov and the rest of the region. From there, local roads and forest paths lead to Stupná and the foot of the hill, suitable for both walking and cycling — the terrain is gentle and requires no special fitness preparation.
