Libín

Prachatice, Czechia

About this place

Libín is the highest peak of the Šumava foothills (Šumavské podhůří), rising to 1,093–1,096 metres above sea level roughly 4 km south of Prachatice. Its forested summit dominates the Prachatice basin and stands out as a steep, prominent landmark against the gentler surrounding hills.

What is on the summit?

At the top of Libín stands a stone lookout tower known as Rudolf's Tower (Rudolfova věž), built in 1883 by the Šumava Tourist Club, part of the Austrian Tourist Club founded in 1879. It was named in honour of Rudolf, son of Emperor Franz Joseph I. The cylindrical stone structure is 27 metres tall, with an internal wooden staircase of 138 steps leading to the viewing gallery. From there, visitors get a sweeping panorama covering much of Šumava and the Bavarian Forest, and on exceptionally clear days even the Alps come into view.

What is the tower's history?

The decision to build the tower was made in January 1881. The structure survived a turbulent 20th century — during World War II, and again for a period in the 1950s, it served military purposes, hosting a small air-defence garrison. The tower underwent a thorough reconstruction in 1994, restoring it for tourist use.

What is the Libín nature reserve?

On the northern slope of the mountain, just below the summit, lies the Libín nature reserve, covering nearly 69 hectares and established in 1988. It protects a natural mountain forest of fir and beech, including patches with an almost primeval character. The dominant tree species are silver fir and European beech, and the stands here are considered among the most valuable in the entire Šumava foothills. The reserve was created specifically to preserve this unique, largely undisturbed forest environment for future generations.

How do you get to Libín?

The mountain is a popular hiking destination. A red-marked trail leads to the summit from Prachatice, following part of the Way of the Cross route, covering about 6 km. A shorter alternative is the blue-marked trail from the village of Libínské Sedlo, about 3 km long. Both routes pass through forest, offering views of the surrounding hills before reaching the open area around the lookout tower.
