Sveti Ilija

Sveti Ilija is a peak of the Biokovo massif rising above the village of Bast on the Makarska Riviera. Reaching 1642 meters, it is regarded as one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Croatia — and getting to its summit is a genuine challenge even for seasoned hikers.

Where is Sveti Ilija located?

The peak and its ridge sit in the northwestern part of Biokovo's central range, above the village of Rastovac in the Zagvozd municipality. Although the summit itself is lower than neighboring peaks in the massif, this is the point where Biokovo narrows the most, opening up views toward both the coast and the inland side of the mountain at once.

A small chapel dedicated to Saint Elijah the Thunderer stands on the summit — one of the most beautiful and original sacred structures anywhere on Biokovo. How do you reach the summit from Bast?

Several mountain trails lead to Sveti Ilija from Bast. The popular Bast – Bunar Mijaći – Sveti Ilija route takes around 4 hours of climbing, while the variant via Osičine takes about 4.5 hours. There is also a loop, Bast – Šćirovac – Sveti Ilija – Bast, considered one of the most demanding mountaineering routes in all of Croatia. The peak can also be approached from Rastovac or Lokva, but the ascents starting in Bast are among the most frequently chosen by hikers.

When is the best time to go?

Given the rocky, stony, and in places exposed terrain, climbing Sveti Ilija is best planned from spring through early autumn, avoiding the hottest midday hours in summer and days with poor visibility. The route demands solid fitness, proper hiking boots, and a good supply of water, since there are no facilities along the way.
