About this place

The Church of St. James the Elder stands in Veverská Bítýška, a small town in the Brno-venkov district of the South Moravian Region, roughly a dozen kilometres west of Brno. As the town's parish church, it dominates the local skyline with its tall, pyramidal tower rising above the west front.

How do you get there?

Veverská Bítýška sits right on the road connecting Brno with Tišnov and Kuřim, so driving from central Brno takes about half an hour. The town is also reachable by regional bus services from Brno. The church stands in the centre of the town and serves as a natural landmark for visitors exploring the area, including nearby Veveří Castle on the Svratka River, from which the town took part of its name.

What is the history behind the church?

The parish of Veverská Bítýška is first recorded in 1481, and for centuries it was served by a much more modest timber-and-masonry church measuring just 14 by 8 metres, with a wooden tower and belfry. Once that building could no longer accommodate the growing parish, a new late Baroque church was constructed between 1771 and 1782 on the same site — the building that still stands today. The new church was consecrated on 6 October 1782 and, following renovation work, reconsecrated on 27 May 1903.

What will you see inside and out?

The present church is a single-nave building with a chancel closed by a segmented arch, measuring 29 metres in length and 12 metres in width. A distinctive prismatic tower rises above the west façade, while eight windows painted with images of Czech patron saints light the interior. The main altar dates from 1807–1810 and is the work of the Brno sculptor Ondřej Schweigel. The tower still holds four 17th-century bells, named James, Mary, the noon bell, and the death knell — traditionally rung at funerals.

Who is this place for?

The church appeals mainly to travellers already exploring Veveří Castle and the Svratka valley, as well as to anyone interested in the sacred architecture of South Moravia who wants to see an authentic, lesser-known monument beyond Brno's main tourist routes. It makes a convenient stop on the way between Brno and Tišnov, especially for visitors planning a fuller day trip through the region.
