About this place
The Chapel of the Mother of God at Veveří ranks among the oldest surviving sacred buildings near Brno — a Romanesque-Gothic structure standing roughly 400 meters from Veveří Castle, on the shore of the Brno Reservoir. Administratively it lies within the city of Brno, in the cadastral district of Bystrc, though for church purposes it still belongs to the Roman Catholic parish of Veverská Bítýška.
How old is the chapel at Veveří?
The first written record of the chapel dates to 7 December 1240, making it well over 800 years old. Historians believe it may actually predate the neighboring Veveří Castle itself, and some theories even suggest a pre-Christian shrine once stood on the same spot. Originally the building served as a parish church for a settlement that grew up around it as the castle's outer bailey — a village that vanished during the Hussite Wars and was never rebuilt.
What does the chapel's architecture look like?
It is a two-nave building: the older main nave is Romanesque, while the smaller side nave was added later in the Gothic period. Two portals lead inside — a Gothic one on the west side and a Romanesque one on the south — and four windows light the main nave. Inside, a Romanesque pulpit survives along the north wall, along with fresco fragments in the apse depicting scenes from the life of Mary and of Christ, and three tombstones, including one belonging to Hans Karl Fünkirchen. Traces of seven consecration crosses remain on the walls, marking the bishop's original dedication. The flat wooden ceiling is decorated with coffered panels painted with scenes from Mary's life. The original tower was torn down by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War, leaving only a small turret with two bells today. In 1987 the structure was reinforced with steel cables after cracks appeared in the walls.
What happened to the Madonna of Veveří painting?
For centuries the chapel's greatest treasure was the painting known as the Madonna of Veveří. The original, later partly reworked in Gothic style, was moved to museum collections and is no longer kept in the chapel — a copy hung in its place instead, but that copy was stolen in October 1993 and has never been recovered.
Can visitors tour the chapel?
The chapel is open to the public during the summer holiday season, Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 16:30, except on Mondays and one week in August (8–14 August); hours are coordinated with nearby Veveří Castle. It may close during heavy rain, since the building has neither running water nor electricity, making cleaning difficult. Outside summer it can only be visited by prior arrangement, mainly for organized groups. Admission costs 50 CZK standard, 35 CZK reduced. A parish cemetery surrounded the chapel until 1837, and the building is still occasionally used for weddings and services.
How do you get to the chapel at Veveří?
The chapel sits on the walking route connecting Veveří Castle with the shores of the Brno Reservoir, in the Bystrc district on the edge of Brno. The easiest way to reach it is on foot or by bike along the reservoir trail, or by taking one of the passenger boats that cross the lake to a landing near the castle. It's worth pairing a visit with a tour of Veveří Castle itself and a walk along the reservoir shoreline.
