svatý Jiří

Čebín, Czechia

About this place

The Church of St. George is a historic parish church standing in the center of Čebín, a small village in the Brno-venkov district of South Moravia. The building blends Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque layers into a single structure, making it one of the more interesting examples of the region's long sacred-architecture history near Brno.

How to get there?

Čebín lies northwest of Brno and is well connected by rail — the church sits in the village center, right on the green-marked hiking trail that leads from the local train station toward the Čebínka lookout point. That makes a visit an easy add-on for anyone exploring the countryside around Brno on foot or by bike.

What is the history behind it?

The oldest surviving part of the church, the eastern section of the nave, is Romanesque and dates back to the 13th century. In the first half of the 14th century a Gothic, pentagonally-closed chancel with cross vaulting was added, and traces of medieval wall paintings from that period still survive inside it. At the same time, a tower with a sacristy at its base was built into the northern corner between the chancel and the nave. The tower's original wooden bell floor was replaced with a stone one around 1694.

A turning point came in 1772, when a fire destroyed most of the building. The reconstruction that followed gave the church the Late Baroque appearance it still has today. In 1803, following a design by architect Josef Dewetz, the nave was extended westward, and further Neo-Gothic alterations were carried out in 1851. The church is now protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

What is worth seeing inside?

The interior holds several notable furnishings. A stone baptismal font from the 17th century stands out, alongside a sgraffito depicting the church's patron, St. George — a copy of a work by the celebrated Czech painter Mikoláš Aleš. It is also worth listening for the organ, built in 1903 by Rieger-Kloss of Krnov, one of the leading Czech organ builders around the turn of the 20th century. The chancel's Gothic cross vault, together with its surviving medieval paintings, is the clearest window into the building's oldest layer.

Is it still an active parish?

The church continues to serve as the parish church of the Roman Catholic parish of Čebín, with regular services held several times a week. The exterior can be viewed year-round, but access inside depends on opening hours outside of Mass times — it is worth checking locally before planning a visit, especially on days other than Sunday.
