About this place
The Church of Saint Nicholas stands in Fryšták, a small town in the Zlín Region of eastern Czechia, right at the upper corner of the town's main square, Náměstí Míru. It is the oldest and most recognizable religious building in town and is protected as a cultural monument.
How do you get to the Church of Saint Nicholas in Fryšták?
Fryšták sits a short distance east of Zlín, which is well connected to the town by regular bus service. The church stands in the very centre of town, so it's only a few minutes' walk from the local bus stop. Its tall tower with a distinctive onion-shaped dome is visible from most streets around the square, making the building easy to find even without a map. The rectory and a former farmyard sit right next to the church, and the Salesian centre known as the House of Ignác Stuchlý operates a short walk away, so a visit here pairs naturally with a stroll through the rest of Fryšták.
What is the history behind the church?
The first written record of Fryšták itself dates back to 1356, and the local parish is first mentioned in 1480 — meaning the church has effectively witnessed the town's entire documented history. The building stands on foundations going back to the 14th century, and local tradition holds that a pagan burial ground once occupied the same spot long before. The oldest surviving section of today's church was built in Baroque style in the early 18th century, though part of the nave actually dates from the 16th century. In 1820 the western part of the nave was extended and topped with the tall tower and its onion dome that now define the building's silhouette, and a sacristy was added in 1847. A devastating fire in 1841 forced a near-total rebuild, giving the church the form it still has today. It belongs to the Roman Catholic parish of Fryšták, part of the Vizovice deanery within the Archdiocese of Olomouc.
What can you see in and around the church?
Beneath the church lies a crypt where the former lords of nearby Lukov Castle were once buried, with the last burials recorded in 1715. Local legend claims an underground tunnel runs from the crypt all the way to Lukov Castle, several kilometres away — though nobody has ever confirmed such a passage actually exists. The bell hanging in the tower was cast in 1842, shortly after the post-fire reconstruction. In front of the church stands a stone cross dating from 1763, restored in 2009, one of the few features on the church grounds to have survived in something close to its original form since before the fire. It's also worth glancing at the neighbouring rectory, built in 1717, along with the remains of the old farmyard beside it.
When is the best time to visit?
The exterior of the church can be admired year-round, and its tower shows to particularly good effect in the afternoon light. Once a year, as part of the nationwide Noc kostelů (Night of Churches) event, the building is typically opened to visitors for longer than usual, offering a good chance to see the interior without needing to time a visit around Mass. Outside of that event, access inside depends on the parish's current opening hours, so it's worth checking locally before planning an extended visit.
