Sint-Philomenakerk

About this place

Sint-Philomenakerk is the parish church of Kotem, a small village that forms part of the municipality of Maasmechelen in the Belgian province of Limburg. The church stands on Grotestraat and has anchored this small community for well over a century.

Where did the parish of Kotem come from?

For a long time Kotem was simply part of neighbouring Boorsem and had no parish of its own. That changed in 1889, when the village became an independent parish, opening the way for a proper church of its own. Before that, residents relied on a small chapel dedicated to Saint Philomena, built back in 1834 — it is this chapel's patron saint who later gave her name to the parish church.

How did the current church come to be built?

Once the chapel could no longer serve the growing community, construction of a new church to replace it began in 1891. The design came from architect Mathieu Christiaens. What rose on Grotestraat was a neo-Romanesque brick building laid out as a cross-shaped basilica, with a clearly defined transept cutting across the main nave. This layout was a common choice for newly built parish churches in the region at the time, pairing a traditional form with sturdy, lasting construction.

What stands out about the building itself?

The most distinctive feature of Sint-Philomenakerk is its square tower, divided into three stages and capped with a tall, steeply pitched roof. That silhouette gives the church a recognisable profile that rises above the surrounding rooftops, typical of the neo-Romanesque village churches built across Limburg around the turn of the 20th century.

What can be found inside?

Most of the church's furnishings date from the time of its construction, meaning the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As a result, the altars, pews and other fittings form a coherent, historically unified interior that took shape alongside the building itself, without later large-scale alterations that would have broken up its original character.
