Sax town hall

Sax Town Hall sits right in the centre of town, at the foot of the hill crowned by the well-known Castillo de Sax. Sax itself lies in the province of Alicante, in the Valencian Community, within the Alto Vinalopó district, roughly 12 km from Villena. The town hall is one of the most recognisable buildings in Sax and still works every day as the seat of the local council.

The building faces Plaza de la Constitución, the town's main square, which was redesigned together with the new council building back in the 1970s — the square was previously known as Plaza Calvo Sotelo. A classical-style façade, with a symmetrical row of windows and a formal main entrance, sets the building apart from the surrounding streets and signals its civic role at a glance.

When was the current building constructed?

The present town hall is not the first one on this spot: it replaced an older council building that had stood there before. The town council unanimously approved the technical project, drawn up by architect Félix Palacios Súnico, on 4 March 1974. Construction was awarded to José Conejero Navarro on 7 January 1975, for just under six million pesetas. The finished building, along with the remodelled square, was formally opened on 5 June 1976, in a ceremony attended by the province's civil governor, the president of the Diputación de Alicante and the mayor at the time, Rogelio Cascales.

Why was the building planned on such a generous scale?

The project was designed with decades of use in mind — planners wanted rooms and departments spacious enough to serve the town for at least fifty years. Because of that, the building never housed only the mayor's offices: from the start it also accommodated other public services, including a local government branch and the public library, bringing several municipal functions together under one roof.

What role does the town hall play today?

Half a century after its opening, the building still fulfils its original purpose as the seat of the mayor and the municipal administration of Sax. The square in front of it continues to serve as the town's natural gathering point, hosting local celebrations and civic events throughout the year. Because the castle hill is so close, a walk from the town hall toward the old quarter and up to the walls of Castillo de Sax is one of the most natural ways to explore the town on foot.
