About this place
São Pedro Fort in Biscoitos (Terceira, Azores)
São Pedro Fort (Forte de São Pedro) is a historic defensive structure in the parish of Biscoitos, municipality of Praia da Vitória, on the north coast of Terceira Island in the Azores. Today it works as a viewpoint over the anchorage and coastline beside a village best known for its volcanic rock formations.
Where is the fort and how do you find it?
The fort stands on Terceira's north shore in Biscoitos, at roughly 38.80° N, 27.26° W. It occupies a commanding position above the small harbour area, so its walls give views over the nearby coast and the Atlantic. Sources also list it as Forte do Porto dos Biscoitos and Forte de Santo António, so it helps to know all three names when searching locally or in Portuguese guides.
Why was it built?
The Azores lay along the routes of ships returning from the Americas and India, and their coasts were repeatedly troubled by pirates and corsairs. The fort was built to protect the Biscoitos anchorage from such raids. Its position let defenders control seaward approaches, and its artillery crossed fire with that of the Forte da Rua Longa to the south.
When was it built?
Sources disagree on the date. One account says the fort was raised around 1520 on the initiative of Pedro Anes do Canto, the Provider of Fortifications (Provedor das Fortificações), and named in honour of the saint. Another says it was built between 1579 and 1581, during Portugal's succession crisis, on the orders of the Corrector of the Azores, Ciprião de Figueiredo e Vasconcelos. The gap suggests the later work may have been a reconstruction or reinforcement of an earlier fort.
The fort in the 19th and 20th centuries
During the Portuguese Civil War (1828–1834), reinforcement work was carried out in 1828 and a military garrison was stationed here to prevent possible landings by opposing forces. In the Second World War the site housed a machine-gun nest. These layers of history show that the fort kept its strategic value for the island's defence over the centuries.
What can you see today?
The fort is now preserved as a viewpoint, thanks to an initiative of the Biscoitos Parish Board. It makes a good stop on a drive along Terceira's north coast: you can see a military structure tied to the island's defence and enjoy the sea views at the same time. The visit combines easily with a walk around Biscoitos, known for its black volcanic rock.
