Hospital da Boa Nova

Angra do Heroísmo, Portugal

About this place

Hospital da Boa Nova in Angra do Heroísmo is a former military hospital in the historic centre of the main town on Terceira Island in the Azores. Today it houses the military section of the Angra do Heroísmo Museum, making it a good stop for visitors who want to combine a heritage building with a lesson in Portuguese and Atlantic history.

How did the hospital begin?

Its origins go back to 1583, when the Spanish commander Álvaro de Bazán led the conquest of Terceira. A field hospital arrived with his forces and eventually took root on the island. The buildings grew up alongside the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Boa Nova, and the hospital mainly served the garrison, including soldiers at the Fortress of São João Baptista. It was established during the Iberian Union, when the Habsburgs ruled Portugal.

Under King Joseph I the building gained a new, large ward. For most of its history it was known as the Royal Hospital (Hospital Real da Boa Nova). It is thought to have been one of the oldest military hospitals in the world, and possibly the oldest.

When did it stop working as a hospital?

The hospital operated in central Angra do Heroísmo until 1943. Its duties then passed to the new Military Hospital at Terra Chã, and the old building began a new chapter.

What can you see today?

The building has been protected as a Property of Public Interest since 1980, and the neighbouring chapel (Ermida da Boa Nova) was classified as early as 1962. In 2016 the museum opened a military history unit here named after Manuel Coelho Baptista de Lima. The exhibition follows the story of the armed forces in the Azores and explains why Terceira was a strategic point on Atlantic routes for centuries.

Frequently asked questions

Is it still a working hospital? No. It stopped serving as a hospital in 1943 and is now part of the museum.

Should I visit the chapel too? Yes. The chapel of Nossa Senhora da Boa Nova stands next door and belongs to the same story that started the whole complex.

Where is it? In the historic centre of Angra do Heroísmo, whose old town is one of the main attractions of the Azores. Check the museum's current opening hours before you go.

Who is it for? Fans of military history, architecture and medicine, and anyone exploring Terceira who wants to understand the island's role in earlier centuries.

Visitor tips

Plan your visit together with a walk around the old town. The complex is within walking distance of the main sights, and the military exhibition usually takes about an hour. The Fortress of São João Baptista, historically linked to the hospital, and the other sections of the Angra do Heroísmo Museum make good additions. If Azorean history interests you, allow extra time and read the captions, which show everyday life for soldiers and doctors on the island. Weather in the Azores changes quickly, so an indoor stop like this also works well on a rainy day when outdoor plans fall through.
