Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Paz

Ponte da Barca, Portugal

About this place

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Peace (Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Paz) is a pilgrimage site in the municipality of Ponte da Barca, in northern Portugal's Viana do Castelo District. It stands in the parish of Vila Chã, about 10 km from the town of Ponte da Barca, at the entrance to Peneda-Gerês National Park. Religious history, a quiet setting and a few unusual sights make it worth a stop for pilgrims and for travellers exploring the Minho region alike.

How did the sanctuary begin?

The story goes back to 1917. According to tradition, on 10 and 11 May Our Lady appeared to a ten-year-old shepherd boy named Severino Alves. The sanctuary itself came much later. About fifty years after the apparition, in 1967, an image of Mary was placed on the site. A chapel opened in 1969, and in the 1970s an underground crypt was built to mark the exact spot of the apparition.

What is there to see?

The complex includes a chapel, a church and a museum. There are also picnic areas and many depictions of Our Lady, of the shepherd Severino and of Canon Avelino, a figure tied to the sanctuary's history.

The crypt is the highlight. Its altar is a three-tonne block of quartz crystal set at the place of the apparition, described as probably the largest known on the Iberian Peninsula. A museum collection of quartz crystals adds interest for visitors who do not come for religious reasons.

Is it a popular pilgrimage destination?

Yes. After renovation, the sanctuary welcomed around 20,000 pilgrims in 2023. The busiest period is around the anniversary of the apparition in May, when celebrations in honour of Our Lady of Peace take place.

Why visit?

The atmosphere is calm, and its position on the edge of a national park means green hills and mountain scenery all around. Reviewers mostly mention the peace and quiet. It is easy to combine with a trip into Peneda-Gerês or a stay in Ponte da Barca, one of the region's oldest towns.
