Sant Serni de Terrers

Sant Serni de Terrers is a Romanesque church at the north-western edge of the municipality of Capolat, in the Berguedà comarca of Catalonia, Spain. It stands next to the Torre de Terrers farmhouse, which gave the building its lesser-used alternative name, Sant Serni de la Torre.

Where exactly is the church?

Capolat is a small hill municipality in the northern part of Berguedà, in the province of Barcelona. Like much of this pre-Pyrenean landscape, the area is dotted with scattered farmsteads (masies) and isolated parish chapels rather than a single town centre. Sant Serni de Terrers sits in exactly this kind of setting, away from any administrative hub, right by the old Torre de Terrers farmhouse. Its coordinates are 42.1079°N, 1.73009°E.

The site's history goes back to the early Middle Ages. A first, pre-Romanesque church here is recorded as early as the 9th century, reportedly founded under the bishopric of Urgell. The stone building that stands today, however, dates from later — likely the 11th century — and replaced that earlier structure, rising next to the farmhouse that still neighbours it. The church itself is modest in scale, built with a single nave, typical of rural Romanesque churches across this part of Catalonia.

In the 18th century the building was altered: the original apse was removed, and a small side chapel was opened in the south wall. These changes broke with the original Romanesque plan, but they also reflect the church's continuous use across the centuries. Sant Serni de Terrers once served as the seat of its own parish, which was later absorbed into neighbouring church structures — a common fate for small rural parishes in the sparsely populated reaches of Berguedà.

Because of its historical value, the church is listed in Catalonia's cultural heritage register as an asset of local interest (Bé Cultural d'Interès Local), catalogued under reference IPA-3119, maintained by the Diputació de Barcelona.

Given the site's remote, low-infrastructure character, spring and summer are the best times to visit, when longer days and more stable weather make the drive and any walking around the surrounding hills easier.
