Sant Miquel de Serinyana

Sant Miquel de Serinyana is a small Romanesque church in the municipality of Bassella, in the Alt Urgell comarca (Lleida province, Catalonia) — today an abandoned ruin, but a meaningful trace of the region's medieval settlement history.

What survives of the church today?

The roof and vaulted ceiling collapsed long ago; only the four walls and the springing moulding of the former vault remain standing. The west wall still shows a round opening cut out of one block of stone, a small but telling Romanesque architectural detail. The structure is in poor condition, with cracks running across the façade and vegetation growing inside.

The place name Serinyana already appears in documents from 1025, in connection with a donation made by the monk Galindo to the monastery of Sant Andreu de Tresponts, and again in 1029 as a boundary marker of the Sant Just estate. No record has survived, however, that refers specifically to the construction or consecration of the church building itself. What is known is that it depended ecclesiastically on the parish of Sant Serni in Ogern, and its altar was relocated there once Sant Miquel fell out of use.
