Sant Pere de Vilamonera

Sant Pere de Vilamonera is a Romanesque chapel in the municipality of La Baronia de Rialb, in the Noguera comarca, Lleida province, Catalonia. Perched above the Rialb valley at around 585 metres above sea level, it belongs to a scattered family of small rural Romanesque churches found throughout this part of Catalonia.

Where exactly is the chapel located?

The ruins sit in the central part of La Baronia de Rialb municipality, on a level stretch of ridge on the left side of the Rialb valley, north of the hamlet of Politg. The chapel stands right next to the remains of the former Vilamonera farmhouse, which gave the building its name. What does the building look like?

Sant Pere de Vilamonera was built as a single-nave church covered by a barrel vault. A semicircular apse closes the nave to the east, separated from the rest of the interior by a presbytery arch. The apse still preserves a splayed window — widening toward the interior on both sides — a common way for small Romanesque churches in the area to bring in light without weakening the thick stone wall. The original entrance opened on the south wall, though today only the door jambs remain; the rest of the portal has been lost.

Two building techniques in one wall

Looking closely at the masonry reveals two distinct approaches. The upper sections of the walls use roughly dressed stone blocks laid in even, regular courses. The lower part of the apse, by contrast, is built from larger, barely worked stones set without the same regularity — a detail that may point to different building phases or the reuse of earlier material.
