Saint John's Fortresss

St. John's Fortress is the highest-standing of Šibenik's fortresses in Croatia, perched on a hilltop roughly 120 meters above the old town. Built alongside the neighboring Barone Fortress, it formed part of the city's defensive system in the mid-17th century and today is one of four historic forts open to visitors in Šibenik.

Where does the name come from and what's its history?

The hill on which the fortress stands had held a medieval church dedicated to St. John the Baptist since at least 1444, which gave the fortification its name. From the 1520s onward, Šibenik's citizens petitioned the Venetian senate to fortify the hills surrounding the city, fearing an attack from that direction. The Cretan War against the Ottoman Empire finally forced the issue.

In spring 1646, a Genoese engineer in Venetian service, Father Antonio Leni, designed a symmetric fort with a hornwork extended toward the enemy and two demi-bastions facing the city. Together with the adjacent Barone Fortress, it was built in just 58 days, through the combined effort of military engineers and local citizens. The new fortifications proved their worth almost immediately: in 1646 and 1647 they successfully repelled consecutive Ottoman attacks on Šibenik.

St. John's Fortress has a distinctive star-shaped layout typical of early modern military architecture and is described as the largest and highest fortress in Šibenik. Following extensive renovation, it reopened to the public in the summer of 2022. From its walls, visitors get a panoramic view over the old town, St. Anthony's Channel, and the surrounding hills — one of the best vantage points in the city.

The fortress grounds now house an educational campus with interactive classrooms, accommodation space, and conference facilities, used by student groups, young professionals, and artists taking part in field courses and creative-industry programs.

The fort also gained wider recognition as a filming location for the popular series Game of Thrones, drawing additional visitors who recognize the setting from the screen.

The fortress sits on the hill overlooking Šibenik's old town, directly next to Barone Fortress. Since much of the route is exposed with little shade, spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons to visit, offering milder temperatures and clearer views thanks to cleaner air. Evening hours are especially good for photography, as the sun sets over the channel and the old town below.
