sady Bratří Čapků

Praga, Czechia

About this place

Sady Bratří Čapků is a small park in Prague's Vinohrady district, within the Prague 2 municipal borough. It sits between the streets Korunní to the north, U Vodárny to the east, Slovenská to the south and Kladská to the west — a compact green pocket tucked among the surrounding apartment blocks, an easy walk from the heart of Vinohrady.

Where does the park's name come from?

Until 2016 the park was part of a larger green area known as Bezručovy sady, named in 1928 after the poet Petr Bezruč. When the grounds were split that year, the section falling within Prague 2 was given a new name honoring the Čapek brothers: painter and writer Josef Čapek, and his younger brother, writer Karel Čapek. The choice was far from arbitrary — both brothers were closely tied to Prague 2, having lived in Vinohrady and worked at the Vinohrady Theatre nearby.

What is there to see in the park?

Sady Bratří Čapků functions as a typical neighborhood park — a spot for everyday rest for residents of the surrounding buildings, for short walks and brief escapes from city noise rather than a major sightseeing destination. The Prague 2 borough is currently carrying out a revitalization of the park, adding new play areas, sports facilities and rest spots, while also aiming to make the layout more open and better equipped. The eastern part of the grounds is being set aside for dog owners, who will get a fenced dog run with play elements for their pets.

Who is this park for?

This is a place for anyone looking for a quiet moment in a densely built-up part of Vinohrady, rather than a destination in its own right. It works well as a short stop while exploring the neighborhood — walkers can rest in the shade of the trees, and dog owners will appreciate the planned dedicated dog area. Its position close to Korunní and Slovenská, two of the district's busier streets, makes the park easy to reach on foot from many points in Vinohrady.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sady Bratří Čapků a large park? No — it is a small neighborhood park bounded by four streets (Korunní, U Vodárny, Slovenská and Kladská), not an extensive area of urban greenery.

Why is the park named after the Čapek brothers? The name honors Josef Čapek, a painter and writer, and his younger brother Karel Čapek, a writer — both had strong ties to Vinohrady and worked at the Vinohrady Theatre there.

How does it differ from Bezručovy sady? Until 2016 the two areas formed one continuous park named after the poet Petr Bezruč. After the split, the portion within Prague 2 was renamed for the Čapek brothers, while the rest of the grounds kept the name Bezručovy sady.

Is there a space for dogs in the park? Yes, the eastern part of the park is reserved for dog owners, where a fenced dog run with play elements is planned.

Is any work currently underway in the park? Prague 2 is carrying out a revitalization of the park that includes new play areas, sports facilities, rest spots, and an improved layout of the grounds.
