Heroldovy sady

Praga, Czechia

About this place

Heroldovy sady is a small municipal park in Prague's Vršovice district (Prague 10), set between Kodaňská and Holandská streets and Vršovické náměstí square. Covering about 1.43 hectares at an elevation of roughly 224–235 metres, it gives residents and visitors a compact patch of greenery right next to the heart of Vršovice.

Where exactly is the park located?

The park is made up of two parts: an enclosed upper section with a playground, and a freely accessible area stretching out behind the Vršovice chateau, also known as Rangherka. That split gives the park a dual character — one part functions as a quiet neighbourhood square, the other as an open walking area connected to the grounds of a former estate.

Where does the name Heroldovy sady come from?

The park is named after František Herold, who served as mayor of Vršovice. Naming the park after him was a way of commemorating a figure tied to the development of this part of the city.

What is the history behind this site?

Back in the 14th century, the land where the park now stands was covered in vineyards. That changed in 1842, when Jiří Rangheri bought the plot and built a silk-spinning mill on it. To feed the operation, a mulberry grove was planted, since mulberry leaves were used to feed the silkworms raised for the mill. Traces of that era survive today in the buildings of the former estate, still known as Rangherka.

What can visitors find in the park today?

Modern-day Heroldovy sady is defined mainly by its varied tree cover — maples, limes, pines, spruces, ashes and yews all grow here. The park has paved paths, modern lighting, and benches for those who want to sit down for a while. The enclosed upper section includes a children's playground, making the park a convenient spot for local families.

One notable feature of park life here is a "park library," running since 2013 — the first initiative of its kind in the Vršovice district. The idea is simple: anyone can drop off a book they'd like to pass on to other readers and pick up something else in return. This informal book-swap has become one of the park's distinctive features.

Who is this park suited for?

With its combination of playground, benches and shaded paths, Heroldovy sady works both as an everyday rest spot for Vršovice residents and as a brief stop for visitors exploring this part of Prague away from the busiest tourist crowds. The nearby Rangherka estate adds a bit of historical context to a walk through the park.
