Rybníček u Dolního Dvora

Lipnice nad Sázavou, Czechia

About this place

Rybníček u Dolního Dvora is a small, shallow pond tucked into the Vysočina countryside, on a tributary of the Křivoláčský stream roughly two kilometers southeast of Lipnice nad Sázavou. Its water surface covers barely 0.2 hectares, yet since 2019 the site has held the status of a nature monument of the Vysočina Region, with a protective buffer zone stretching across 3.5 hectares of surrounding meadows and wetlands.

Why is this tiny pond protected?

Rybníček u Dolního Dvora stands out among the hundreds of ponds scattered across the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands because it hosts all three species of newts found in the region. A substantial population of great crested newts lives here alongside alpine newts and common (smooth) newts — a rare combination that signals exceptionally clean water and a healthy habitat. The pond and its surroundings are also home to the moor frog, an amphibian tied closely to damp meadows and small woodland ponds.

What grows here besides the amphibians?

The vegetation in and around the pond includes marsh gentian and a small pondweed species — plants typical of nutrient-poor, oligotrophic water that cannot tolerate pollution or eutrophication. Habitats of this kind have become increasingly scarce across the intensively farmed Czech countryside, which adds to the ecological weight of this small reserve.

Who looks after the site?

The pond is state-owned and managed by the Agency for Nature Conservation and Landscape Protection of the Czech Republic (AOPK ČR), the body responsible for overseeing specially protected areas across the Vysočina Region. The nature monument was formally declared on 2 May 2019, following years of monitoring that confirmed the uniqueness of the local amphibian population.

Visiting Rybníček u Dolního Dvora

The pond sits in a quiet rural setting close to Lipnice nad Sázavou, a town best known for the massive Gothic castle that dominates its skyline. For visitors interested in nature and calm countryside walks, this modest reserve makes for an interesting side trip alongside a visit to Lipnice itself — a picturesque town with a rich history, where writer Jaroslav Hašek spent the final years of his life.
