About this place
Residência senhorial dos Castelo Melhor in Ansião
Residência senhorial dos Castelo Melhor is a historic noble residence in the municipality of Ansião, Leiria District, central Portugal. It stands in the parish of Santiago da Guarda and appears in sources under several other names: Solar dos Condes de Castelo Melhor, Paço dos Vasconcelos, or simply "Castelo". Its coordinates are roughly 39.948 N, 8.480 W.
What kind of building is it?
It is a tower-type manor house, made up of a tower, a residential wing and an attached chapel. All of these open onto a closed courtyard. Near the tower there used to be an entrance portal, which has since disappeared. Some of the window and door openings still show Manueline features, the Portuguese late-Gothic style associated with the reign of Manuel I.
When was it built?
The residence dates to the second half of the 15th century, although the tower is believed to be older than the rest of the complex. That makes it a good example of how Portuguese noble families expanded their seats around an earlier defensive core.
Heritage status
Since 1978 the site has been classified as a National Monument (Monumento Nacional), the highest level of protection in Portugal. It is listed in the country's heritage registers, including the SIPA database kept by the Portuguese heritage authorities.
The Roman mosaics
The biggest surprise came from archaeology. During restoration work, valuable Roman mosaics were found beneath the floors. Seventeen compositions were recorded, in shades of red, yellow, blue and white. The group is considered one of the most important sets of Roman mosaics ever found in Portugal. Some of them have been preserved so that visitors can see them on site.
Who owns it, and what has happened recently?
The residence belongs to the municipality (Câmara Municipal de Ansião). The council supervised, and partly funded, the restoration the building recently went through. It also carried out landscaping and works on the grounds around the residence (the so-called arranjos exteriores).
