About this place
Castle of Penela (Castelo de Penela): a medieval stronghold above the Mondego valley
The Castle of Penela (Castelo de Penela) crowns a hill above the town of Penela in the Coimbra District of central Portugal. It is a medieval fortress with roots in the 11th century and today it feels more like an atmospheric ruin than a fully preserved castle. For anyone interested in history it makes an easy, rewarding stop: you can walk along the walls and enjoy wide views over the surrounding countryside.
Where is Penela Castle?
The castle stands in the town of Penela, in Penela Municipality, Coimbra District, at roughly 40.031° N, 8.391° W. It was built on a hill that dominates the area, which is why the walls offer such far-reaching views. Coimbra is close: buses from the Coimbra bus terminal to Penela take about 30 to 40 minutes.
What is the history of the castle?
The stronghold dates back to the 11th century and was founded by Sesnando Davides, who became governor of the lands south of the Douro River after Coimbra was captured in 1064. The castle belonged to the Mondego defensive line, a chain of fortifications that protected Coimbra during the Reconquista. Penela served as a guardian of that important city.
In the 12th century, under Afonso Henriques, who moved his court to Coimbra in 1131, significant works took place. The castle was enlarged and the original fortress was turned into a keep. Over the following centuries the site was adapted, expanded and remodelled many times. Its walls reach up to 19 metres in height. In 1910 it was declared a national monument by decree.
Why visit?
Penela and the nearby Montemor-o-Velho castle are considered fine examples of defensive architecture from that period. Here you can see the hallmarks of a medieval fortification: a commanding hilltop position, massive walls and a keep as a last refuge. The views from the walls are the main reward for the climb.
