Quinta do Bonjardim

Belas, Portugal

About this place

Quinta do Bonjardim is a historic noble estate in Belas, in the municipality of Sintra, Lisbon District, Portugal. Its origins go back to the 16th century, and in the 18th and 19th centuries it became a gathering place for a cultural elite, under the patronage of the Counts of Redondo and Vimioso.

What is the history of Quinta do Bonjardim?

The earliest reference to the estate dates from 1580, when it belonged to Martim Afonso de Sousa, the first governor of Portuguese India. At that time the quinta was essentially a medieval working farm, surrounded by several smaller holdings.

The turning point came on 24 October 1587, when Diogo de Sousa bought it. It stayed with the Sousa de Prado family, the Counts of Redondo and later Marquesses of Borba. Under Diogo de Sousa the property changed from a farming estate into a noble leisure retreat. A Renaissance-style house was built, serving as a hunting pavilion and summer residence.

What is there to see?

One of the highlights is the chapel. It has a large tribune decorated with blue and white azulejos, the Portuguese glazed tiles, dated to around 1718 and attributed to Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes. The chapel also holds a polychrome earthenware "Last Supper" made by Machado de Castro in the 18th century.

The second distinctive feature is the French-style garden, laid out with geometric labyrinth patterns in boxwood. The garden appears in the register of historic gardens kept by a Portuguese association devoted to studying and protecting them. The house and quinta also have their own entries in the national architectural heritage database (SIPA), which reflects their listed status.

Why does it matter in sports history?

In 1888 the first football match ever played in Portugal took place in the entrance courtyard of the quinta. For football fans it is one of the most curious facts about the area around Lisbon: an ordinary courtyard of a noble estate became the starting point of the sport's story in the country.

What does the estate look like?

The quinta combines several layers of history. A house with Renaissance roots, a chapel with azulejos, an 18th-century sculptural work and a formal French garden make up an ensemble that shows how the tastes of the Portuguese aristocracy changed between the 16th and 19th centuries. The path from medieval production farm to elegant summer residence can be read in the layout of the estate itself.

Where is Quinta do Bonjardim?

The estate lies in Belas, in the municipality of Sintra, northwest of Lisbon. Its coordinates are 38.790248 N, 9.264624 W. The area is part of the historic landscape of Sintra, known for its palaces, villas and gardens.
