About this place
Fábrica da Pólvora de Barcarena is a former gunpowder factory located in the municipality of Oeiras, in the valley of the Ribeira de Barcarena stream, close to Lisbon. Today the former industrial site operates as a large cultural and recreational park, and one of the region's most notable centers for artistic and scientific activity.
How did an industrial site end up in this valley?
Industrial use of this valley dates back to the late 15th century, when ironworks (ferrarias) producing weapons were established here in 1487. These ironworks remained active until the end of the 17th century, but earlier, between 1618 and 1619, a first workshop for manufacturing black powder was set up nearby. That moment is considered the true starting point of the powder factory that would remain on this site for the following centuries.
Who was responsible for building the factory?
The complex that survived into modern times was created under the direction of the Marquis of Alenquer, Diogo da Silva e Mendonça, Viceroy of Portugal between 1617 and 1621. He commissioned the kingdom's chief engineer, Leonardo Turriano, to design and construct a building to house the first mills for producing black powder. The system introduced at the time, known as galgas, used stone wheels to grind materials and was considered highly innovative for its era.
How was production organized on site?
The factory stretched along both banks of the Ribeira de Barcarena stream and was split into two separate sections: Fábrica de Baixo (the lower factory) and Fábrica de Cima (the upper factory). The presence of the stream was no coincidence — its flow powered the galgas, stone grinding wheels that reduced raw materials into fine powder. This layout allowed the natural shape of the valley to be used to drive machinery without relying on other energy sources.
What led to the factory's closure?
Over time, the site's equipment gradually deteriorated. In 1972, a major explosion brought black powder manufacturing at the site to a complete halt. Although the factory adapted by introducing new types of powder, more modern machinery and different energy sources, declining production eventually made running such a large industrial complex unsustainable. The factory was finally closed in 1988.
What can be found there today?
The Municipality of Oeiras acquired the site in 1995, and three years later, in 1998, transformed it into an open complex dedicated to cultural, recreational and entertainment activities. Fábrica da Pólvora de Barcarena has since become a municipal park and one of the leading cultural venues in Oeiras, hosting academic, scientific and artistic events. Among these are historical reenactments and programs linked to local museum-themed months.
Frequently asked questions
Can visitors tour the former gunpowder factory? Yes, the site is now a public park that hosts cultural and educational events open to visitors.
Is the factory still producing gunpowder? No — production ended for good in 1988, and since 1998 the site has functioned as a cultural and recreational park.
Why was the factory built in this particular valley? The Ribeira de Barcarena stream was essential, as its water powered the stone mills (galgas) used to grind raw materials into gunpowder.
