Puerta Bonita is a neighborhood in Madrid, part of the Carabanchel district, whose name also refers to the ornate iron gate standing at the junction of Manuel Lamela and General Ricardos streets.

Where does the name come from?

The neighborhood takes its name from a historic wrought-iron gate originally called Puerta de Madrid. It was one of four entrances to the Vista Alegre estate, a royal property that caught the interest of María Cristina, wife of King Fernando VII, in 1829. She purchased the estate and expanded it with additional buildings. In 1846 a wall was built around the whole property, and the entrance on General Ricardos Street became known locally as Puerta Bonita, or "Beautiful Gate," for the beauty of its wrought-iron ornamentation, cast in an English foundry.

What happened to the original gate?

The original gate, produced in the 19th century by the English foundry R.W. Kennael & Cº of Falkirk, was admired by locals for its craftsmanship. In 1982 it suffered severe damage after being struck by a crane truck, which left the structure partially destroyed. It was not until 2005 that the Madrid City Council decided to rebuild it, recreating the metalwork from the original blueprints and molds and restoring the side pavilions, so the gate once again marks the entrance recognized by Carabanchel residents today.

Administratively, Puerta Bonita covers an area of roughly 1.6 km², and as of February 2020 it had a population of 36,157, making it one of the more densely populated parts of Carabanchel. A significant portion of the neighborhood, about 0.45 km², is occupied by the Quinta de Vistalegre, a former royal estate now largely owned by the regional administration. This historic estate and its surrounding gate are the origin of the whole area's name.
