About this place
Ponte D. Zameiro is a medieval granite bridge over the Ave River in the municipality of Vila do Conde, northern Portugal. It lies in the parish of Macieira da Maia, about 24 km north of Porto, and is one of the area's notable pieces of historic engineering.
Where is Ponte D. Zameiro?
The bridge crosses the Ave in the district of Porto, in the parish of Macieira da Maia. The surroundings are green and rural, with river valleys, fields and small settlements. It takes about half an hour to drive from Porto, and the area can also be reached on foot along a walking route.
What does the bridge look like?
It is built of granite masonry. The layout is slightly curved and the deck rises on a gentle slope. The structure rests on seven piers that form eight spans of unequal width. According to one source the bridge is around 100 m long and 3.5 m wide, so it is narrow and was made for pedestrians and pack animals rather than modern road traffic.
Uneven spans and a curved line are typical of old river-valley bridges, where builders adapted the structure to the terrain and the riverbed.
What is its history?
The bridge's name appears in documents from 1220, in the medieval Inquirições, the royal inquiries carried out in Portugal. This shows that the crossing already existed and mattered in the early Middle Ages. Bibliographic sources also indicate that the present structure may stand on the site of an earlier Roman bridge.
Over the centuries the bridge suffered from poor maintenance. Partial collapses happened several times, and the structure was repaired and rebuilt.
A bridge on the Way of St James
Ponte D. Zameiro is currently listed as the crossing point of the Ave River on the Portuguese Way (Caminho Português), the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. For pilgrims walking north from Porto it is one of the notable stages of the route, and crossing the old granite bridge is one of the memorable moments of the section.
Heritage protection
In 2011 the Portuguese official gazette published a notice opening the classification procedure for "Ponte D. Zameiro e Azenhas". It covers the bridge, the nearby water mills (azenhas) and a weir. Wikidata describes the bridge as a cultural heritage monument in Vila do Conde.
