Obelisco da Praia da Memória

Matosinhos, Portugal

About this place

Obelisco da Praia da Memória rises above the dunes of Matosinhos, between the parishes of Perafita and Lavra just north of Porto. The granite monument sits where a liberal army backing Dom Pedro IV came ashore in July 1832, opening a civil war over Portugal's monarchy.

What does the obelisk commemorate?

On 8 July 1832, roughly 7,500 soldiers of the so-called Liberation Army disembarked on the beach now called Praia da Memória. The fleet was commanded by British admiral George Sartorius. The troops marched into Porto the next day, and the city then withstood a year-long siege by absolutist forces. The event is often called the Landing at Mindelo, after a village a few kilometres up the coast.

How was it built?

António José de Ávila drove the project, funded by public subscription, and veterans of the landing helped pinpoint the spot. Queen Maria II attended the laying of the first stone on 1 December 1840. Sources vary on the later timeline: one says the obelisk was finished in 1864 and declared a national monument in 1880. It is made of granite, with four limestone panels at the base. They record the building initiative, name some Liberation Army commanders and quote Dom Pedro's address to his troops before landing. Matosinhos city council restored it in 2001.

What else is nearby?

The monument stands inside a protected dune strip looked after by the municipality. Wooden walkways cross the dunes, so a short stroll combines the obelisk with sea views. Praia da Memória itself is a wide sandy beach with strong surf, popular with surfers and walkers.

How do you get there?

The site lies north of central Matosinhos near Perafita and Lavra. Driving or cycling along the coast is easiest, then walk the final stretch on the boardwalks. From Porto it takes a few minutes by car.

When should you visit?

Mornings and evenings bring softer light and fewer people. Summer fills the beach, and the Atlantic wind can be strong year-round, so bring a light jacket.
