Quinta de São Gens, incluindo o terreiro a oeste e jardim a este
About this place
Quinta de São Gens in Senhora da Hora, Matosinhos, on the edge of Porto, is an 18th-century manor estate with a baroque garden and woodland, covering roughly 6.5 hectares. The heritage register lists it under the long name "Quinta de São Gens, incluindo o terreiro a oeste e jardim a este", meaning the estate with its western courtyard and eastern garden. It is also known as Quinta do Viso.
What is it?
The core of the property is an 18th-century palacete attributed to the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, who worked in Porto and the surrounding area, Matosinhos included. A baroque garden and a wooded area (mata) surround the house. The grounds also hold 20th-century buildings from a former agricultural station, since the state has owned the estate since 1928.
What can you see in the garden?
A fire in the early 20th century led to a remodelling of the house and its surroundings, but the granite sculptures, a lake-like water tank (tanque-lago) and stone benches survived, all linked to Nasoni. The courtyard (terreiro) to the west and the garden to the east give the register entry its name. Local sources also mention Roman-era use of the site and a religious role in the Middle Ages.
What is its heritage status?
The municipality began a local protection procedure in 2016, but it lapsed in 2018 without being completed. In November 2025 Património Cultural opened a national classification procedure for the Casa e Quinta de São Gens, at the request of the regional body CCDR-N, which currently manages the estate. A 2024 protocol between CCDR-N and Matosinhos council aims to open the estate to the public step by step as a nature and culture park.
How do you get there?
Senhora da Hora is a district of Matosinhos a few kilometres from central Porto, served by the metro (Senhora da Hora station). The estate lies within the parish union of São Mamede de Infesta e Senhora da Hora. Because public access is being introduced in stages, check the current entry rules on the Matosinhos council website before you go.
When should you visit?
Spring and early autumn suit a walk through the garden and woodland, with milder weather and less rain than winter. The visit pairs easily with other local sights, such as the Senhora da Hora church and chapels.
