Pístecký les

Budyně nad Ohří, Czechia

About this place

Pístecký les is a nature reserve stretching along both banks of the Ohře River between the towns of Budyně nad Ohří and Hostěnice, in the Litoměřice district of the Czech Republic. The area was granted protected status in 2006 and is administered by the Regional Authority of the Ústí nad Labem Region.

Why is this forest protected?

The reserve was established to preserve a continuous stretch of floodplain forest growing in the lower Ohře River basin. This is one of the few remaining sections of the river in Bohemia where the channel has kept its free-meandering, natural course, unaltered by hydraulic regulation. As a result, seasonal flooding still shapes the landscape the way it has for centuries, and the forest has retained the structure typical of undisturbed riverside woodland communities.

What can visitors see in spring?

Pístecký les is best known for its spectacular spring forest floor. In March and April, dense carpets of spring snowflake (Leucojum vernum) and striped squill (Scilla vindobonensis) cover the ground beneath the trees — a sight that draws nature lovers from the surrounding region every year. Wood anemone, European wild ginger and hollowroot fumewort grow alongside them, and as the weather warms further, wild garlic appears, filling the forest with its distinctive scent.

How can you explore the reserve?

A red-marked hiking trail runs through the area along the left bank of the Ohře River. The route takes visitors through the most characteristic parts of the floodplain forest without requiring them to leave the marked path, which matters here — the loose forest floor and waterlogged patches within the protected area can be sensitive to trampling. A walk along the river is also a good opportunity to spot waterfowl and wading birds that make use of the natural, undeveloped banks.
