Stradonka

Stradonka is a wooden lookout tower standing right next to the village of Stradonice, in the Peruc municipality, Louny district, in the Ústí nad Labem region of the Czech Republic. It was built in 2009 on the initiative of the Women's Club of Stradonice, with support from the Peruc municipal authorities. The tower stands six meters tall, with its viewing platform reaching a height of three meters — a small, unassuming structure that makes for a quick and easy stop on a walk through the surrounding countryside.

What can you see from the tower?

From the platform, visitors get a view over the Czech Central Uplands (České středohoří), and on clear days the distant Ore Mountains (Krušné hory) also come into sight. At the top, a diagram identifies and labels the visible hills, making it easy to pick out individual peaks on the horizon. In 2012, a set of analemmatic sundials nicknamed "Stradonky" were installed right next to the tower — a small extra worth checking out while you're up there.

Why was it built here?

The tower isn't standing in a random spot — it was erected on the remains of the defensive rampart of a former Celtic hillfort at Stradonice, dating back to roughly the 5th century BC. Its shape deliberately echoes a Celtic guard tower that would once have defended this stronghold, giving the visit an extra historical layer. The Stradonice hillfort is known among archaeologists as one of the more significant La Tène culture sites in the Czech Republic, and today's lookout tower is a modern nod to that history.

How do you get there?

Stradonka sits just east of the village of Stradonice, close to Peruc, in a quiet rural corner of the Louny district. It makes a good target for a short walk or a stop along a cycling route through the region — the area sees little tourist traffic, so a visit here feels low-key and unhurried. The easiest approach is to drive to Stradonice or Peruc and continue on foot or by bike from there.

When is the best time to visit?

The tower is small and can be visited any time of year, but visibility is best on clear days, especially in spring and autumn when the air is cleaner and the Ore Mountains become visible in the distance. In summer, an early morning or evening visit helps you avoid the strongest sun while standing on the open platform.
