Pazo da Laxe

Where does this manor come from?

The earliest building on the site dates to 1520, raised by Alonso de Gundín and his wife. The pazo visible today is largely the result of a remodeling carried out around 1700 by later heirs, Alonso de Gudín and Beatriz Salgado, who used ashlar stone brought from the nearby Sigral Castle — which explains the solid, regular masonry of the main block. In 1650, Francisco Salgado Gundín made the estate the seat of a family entail (mayorazgo), tying Pazo da Laxe to a single line of inheritance for generations.

The complex is more than the residence itself: it also includes a dovecote, a traditional Galician granary (hórreo) raised on stone legs, a fountain, and a separate chapel dedicated to Santa Lucía. The chapel, dated to the 15th century, has a simple rectangular plan and a gable roof — older than most of the current palace and a trace of an earlier building phase on the same plot.
