Pazin Castle

History of the fortress

The first written record of the castle dates to 983, when Emperor Otto II confirmed possession of the fortress to the Bishop of Poreč. Over the following centuries, the structure changed hands multiple times – from bishops to the Schwarzenburg family, the Counts of Gorizia, and finally to the Habsburgs, who took control in 1374. In 1766, the castle was sold to the Laderchi de Montecuccoli family for 240 florins and remained their property until 1945.

The defensive strength of the fortress was proven by the fact that it was never conquered during the wars with Venice – testament to its strategic importance and solid construction.
