Palazzo Comunale di Rovigno

Rovinj, Croatia

About this place

Palazzo Comunale di Rovigno (Croatian: Gradska palača, the Town Hall of Rovinj) is the seat of local government in the heart of the old town of Rovinj on the Istrian peninsula. For centuries it has housed the town administration, and its facade is one of the recognisable sights near the main square.

Where is the Communal Palace in Rovinj?

The building stands close to the central old-town square, Marshal Tito Square. You reach it by passing through the Balbi Arch, a former town gate that still serves as a striking entrance to the historic core. That makes the palace easy to fit into a stroll through the narrow lanes below the hill crowned by the Church of St Euphemia.

What is the history of the building?

Tourism sources trace its origins to 1308, when a praetorian palace stood on the site. Other accounts stress that the core of the present building dates from the Venetian era, in the 16th century. The difference reflects how often the structure was rebuilt. Over the centuries it changed shape, and in the 19th century it was even reduced in size. At one stage the ground floor served as a prison.

In 1822 the covered passage running through the old town gate was pulled down. Between 1850 and 1860 the facade and atrium were renovated and decorated with coats of arms, including that of Rovinj. A further facade renovation in 1935 gave the palace the look it has today.

What about the interior?

In the council chamber a wall painting from 1580 survives, showing an allegory of town government. The work was partly preserved and later restored, and it now hangs in the chamber of the town council. Because the rooms are used by officials, sightseeing is mostly from the outside.

Is it worth a stop?

For anyone interested in architecture and Istrian history, the palace is a good example of Venetian heritage layered with later alterations. The most rewarding view is the facade with its coats of arms and the surroundings of the Balbi Arch. Combine the visit with a walk around the old town, the waterfront and the area around St Euphemia's Church.

What period is the building from? Its beginnings are linked to 1308, the current core to the Venetian period (16th century), and the present facade to work done in 1935.

What remains of the older interiors? A wall painting from 1580 in the town council chamber.

Is it far from the harbour? Rovinj's old town is compact, so it is a short walk of a few minutes.

Summary

The Communal Palace is not a headline attraction for a dedicated trip, but it is an important stop on a walk through town. It combines medieval, Venetian and nineteenth-century threads, and helps explain how power and architecture in this Adriatic town evolved over time. Pause by the coats of arms on the facade, look at the neighbouring arch, then continue uphill toward the basilica.
